Maryland Centers Awarded $600,000 in Federal Education Grants

02/19/2002

Baltimore – Three Neighborhood Networks centers in Maryland have received more than $600,000 in grants from the U.S. Department of Education. The grants, given through the Community Technology Center (CTC) program, will allow the Autumn Woods, Bay Ridge and Circle Terrace apartments to expand computer-based education efforts at their Neighborhood Networks centers.

The U.S. Department of Education received more than 1300 applications to the Community Technology Centers (CTC) Program in 2001. The program’s purpose is to provide access to computers and other forms of information technology in an educational setting to low-income, urban and rural areas and economically distressed communities.

With the CTC grants, the centers will be able to offer a variety of technology-based learning and employment opportunities for residents of their communities. Housing Opportunities Unlimited (HOU), a nationally recognized resident services provider, will work with the property management company, the centers and local nonprofits to offer beginner and advanced computer courses to adult residents. HOU will work with local schools to develop after-school programs and will offer computer instruction and life skills development coaching to children.

“HOU operates Neighborhood Networks centers to help residents of assisted housing communities advance in their employment and education and take part in community life” said Stephen Fulton, regional director of HOU. “The CTC grants will enable these residents to achieve all of these goals. Up-to-date hardware and software, computer-proficient staff, and a network of supportive local partners will equip the residents, youth and adults, who use the centers with resources that will help them excel professionally and grow personally.”

Last year, partnerships with five HOU developed Neighborhood Networks centers in Maryland generated almost $1 million in federal anti-drug money earmarked for Neighborhood Networks programs.

Privately managed by the Baltimore-based Landex Management Company, the Autumn Woods, Bay Ridge and Circle Terrace apartments communities have a combined population of almost 2,500 residents in Bladensburg, Annapolis and Lansdowne County, respectively.
